Skydance New Media, a game development studio headed by Uncharted series creator Amy Hennig, announced on Tuesday that it will develop a new Star Wars game in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The currently untitled game will be “a richly cinematic action-adventure game featuring an original story in the legendary Star Wars galaxy,” said Skydance.
Hennig expressed both excitement and thankfulness while reflecting on the opportunity to work on something carrying the Star Wars name.
“I’ve often described how seeing Star Wars in 1977 essentially rewired my 12-year-old brain, shaping my creative life and future indelibly,” said Hennig. “I’m elated to be working with Lucasfilm Games again to tell interactive stories in this galaxy that I love.”
This isn’t Hennig’s first brush with the Star Wars franchise. In 2014, the award-winning developer joined Visceral Games to work on Project Ragtag. According to a report by Kotaku, the game would have been a story-based title set shortly after the original Star Wars moviestarring a group of space scoundrels trying to pull off a large-scale heist. However, Visceral Games was later shut down in 2017, after which the game was reportedly placed in the hands of EA Vancouver. Two years later, it was reported that the game had been canceled altogether.
Lucasfilm Games Vice President Douglas Reilly spoke highly of Hennig and her colleagues while discussing the newly-announced title.
“[Skydance’s] vision for making inviting, cinematic interactive entertainment makes this collaboration very exciting. We’re working hard with their team of experienced and talented developers, and we’re looking forward to sharing more with Star Wars fans when the time is right,” said Reilly.
No further details were given regarding this unnamed title, which joins the ranks of several other in-development Star Wars games. Earlier this year, EA announced that it would develop three new Star Wars titles: A sequel to 2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a strategy game, and a first-person shooter. Additionally, Ubisoft is working on an open-world Star Wars game, while Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human developer Quantic Dream debuted a trailer for Star Wars Eclipse at the 2021 Game Awards. Aspyr Media is also developing a remake of BioWare’s critically acclaimed 2003 RPG, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
Skydance New Media’s Star Wars game isn’t the only big project the studio is currently handling. In late 2021, the company announced it would collaborate with Marvel Entertainment to create a “narrative-driven, blockbuster action-adventure game, featuring a completely original story and take on the Marvel Universe.” Which of these games will see the light of day first remains to be seen, but it’s safe to say that Hennig’s new company seems to be attracting some high-profile partners so far.
