Following a financially successful first quarter, Chinese online game provider NetEase announced today that it was partnering with Marvel Entertainment to bring original content based on Marvel’s beloved characters to “China and beyond.” The joint projects include video games, comics, and TV series.
In a press release, Marvel Entertainment President Dan Buckley said, “As a global leader in online games, NetEase is the perfect fit to help bring the Marvel Universe to more fans around the world. We can’t wait to share more about the exciting new games and other content that will be developed with this partnership.”
NetEase has a reputation for thriving in the Chinese game market despite the region’s restrictive licensing policies. The company has been licensing video games, particularly online games, for over two decades, bringing titles like World of Warcraft, Minecraft, and Eve Online to Chinese audiences. Meanwhile, Marvel’s characters have had a monumental effect on the entertainment world, with a ten-year series of successful films culminating in a $2.6 billion performance by Avengers: Endgame.
The press release didn’t offer any additional details about these forthcoming projects, or when they’re expected to launch. This partnership fits into the larger pattern of growth in China’s game market; the country now represents 50% of the world’s PC game revenue and 25% of mobile revenue. Marvel is already a hot commodity in China, so it’ll be exciting to see what kind of content this team-up yields.
